(Mom had gotten a vacuum cleaner for Mother's Day, didn't she?)

  2. I am trying to figure out if he's being a good sport and looking happy about the present, or if it was actually on his list of things he really wanted for Father's Day!

  3. Typical Dad, leaving the seat up again

  4. I have to ask...did he really need a new seat or it was an inside family joke?

  6. Wow, this photo almost works as a caption contest. Thanks for your comments everyone. They really made me laugh.

As for the story behind this picture... I'm not really sure. I saw it in my photo album the other day and thought it looked like a fun photo, what with Father's Day this weekend. The more I looked at it, the more I questioned what we were thinking. Obviously, it was a joke (you can even see that it was in a paper bag instead of being wrapped), but for the life of me I can't recall. I even phoned my Mom and asked her, but she didn't remember it. Perhaps, if my sister reads this, she'll chime in with her recollections.

Now a question for you. If you hadn't known that this photo was taken in 1980 from my caption, would you have guessed it was that old? Maybe the fact that the toilet seat was brown might have given it away, but otherwise, the photo seems rather devoid of clues as to year. Agree? Disagree?

  7. Oh, and Daisy, I'm sure my Dad was being a good sport. I'm pretty sure it's not what he would have asked for as a Father's Day gift. But, then again, he was always horrible with providing gift ideas, so that may be why he was given the toilet seat. :)

The velour furniture is a clue. Do they even make that stuff any more? I hope not. It frightened me. I've been in therapy for 20 years to get over that whole "velour furniture scratching the backs of my legs" trauma.

(Oh look... it's going to turn out to be a goofy day after all! LOL)

  9. I would I guessed it was the early 80's/late 70's.

Has the dad got an upgrade now?

  10. @Kelly -- I loved that gold-colored love seat. I remember being a pre-schooler when my Mom had it recovered into that fabric, and helping her pick out the velvet-like upholstry. There's a lesson there, of course: If your preschooler likes the fabric, it's probably not the best choice. :)

@Claire -- The Dad received many upgrades over the years. I'm pretty sure that the lovely shade of brown didn't last too long and was quickly replaced with a white toilet.
