Writing: Creating romance novel book covers

screen capture from better.tv romance novel cover segmentBetter.tv, which is part of Better Homes and Gardens, has a video segment about how a cover for a romance novel from Dorchester publishing is created. The segment features an interview with a cover artist and footage from a modeling session.

The book that's featured looks interesting. It's C.L. Wilson's Queen of Song and Souls, which is due out late this year from Dorchester.

I read a lot of books and I have a weakness for good romance novels. I have learned not to select romance novels because of a cover. The only book I have ever purchased because a cover caught my eye was Silver Flame by Susan Johnson. I thought the cover was kinda silly but after reading the first few pages I decided to buy it.

  2. A long time ago I used to buy based on cover, but now I buy despite the cover. The cover just doesn't tell you much that's useful, except for maybe the type of story you should expect to find between the pages. Steamy love story? Lots of humor? Dark suspense? You can usually get a reliable idea about that kind of thing. It's all marketing.
